Small volume – high power
The fuel consists of solid ceramic pellets.
They are inserted in metal fuel rods making up a fuel assembly. A single fuel assembly operates in the reactor for approximately 3–5 years.
The fuel is replaced gradually, not all at once.
A 5-gram fuel pellet = hundreds of kilograms of coal.
